Interview: The charm and challenge of a massage shop, its honest story

Interviewer: Hello! Today, I'm going to talk to someone who runs a massage shop. First, please introduce yourself briefly.

Shopkeeper: Hello, I'm Minji Kim. I'm running a massage shop named Refreshing. I've been in the massage field for eight years, and I've been running the massage shop for about three years. I'm enjoying my work day by day, relieving customers of their fatigue.

Interviewer: Is there a reason why you started a one-person shop?

Shopkeeper: I used to work at a large massage shop, but since I deal with many customers in a day, it was difficult to meet individual needs. I started a one-person shop because I felt that I was limited in the service that customers wanted and wanted to provide more detailed customized service. That was very attractive because I could focus on each and every customer in the one-person shop. Also, I think the biggest advantage is that I can provide customized service to customers in my own way.

Interviewer: So what is the biggest advantage of running a single person shop?

Shop operator: The biggest advantage is that we can keep our relationship with our customers more closely. In large shops, when customers come, many employees respond at the same time, and it is difficult to reflect personal feedback or requirements. On the other hand, one-person shops can provide customized services because they can focus on one customer, which increases customer satisfaction. Also, I am proud that it seems to be a space where customers can comfortably talk about their fatigue and stress.

Interviewer: As much as a relationship with a client is important, building trust is difficult. How do you earn that trust?

Shopkeeper: That's right, I think building trust is the most important thing. I try to communicate a lot to make customers feel comfortable from the first meeting. For example, I ask the customer about the strength or part they want, and I conduct simple consultations before starting the massage. This way, understanding the customer's requirements in advance can increase satisfaction. Also, we create an atmosphere so that the customer can rest comfortably during the massage, and we check whether there are any inconveniences from time to time. I think these small considerations eventually go a long way to earn customer trust.

Interviewer: So what are the downsides or difficulties of running a one-person shop?

Shopkeeper: I think the biggest challenge is having to do everything by myself. It's physically very difficult because I have to do a lot of things at the same time, such as reservation management, cleaning, product management, and public relations. In particular, working on a long stand for a long time builds up a lot of fatigue. Also, when there are a lot of customers, I sometimes get stressed out because I have to pay attention to each and every one of them. However, when a customer is satisfied and grateful, all those difficulties turn into a reward.

Interviewer: A lot of people are starting a one-person shop these days, isn't the competition getting worse?

Shopkeeper: Yes, it's true that more and more people are running one-person shops. That's why I think it's important to provide more differentiated services. Even if the competition is fierce, it's most important to provide a special experience to customers by taking advantage of my strengths and strengths. For example, I think the important point is to create a space where customers want to come back, such as emphasizing expertise in a specific skill or providing a space where they can rest comfortably in addition to massages.

Interviewer: Any advice for prospective entrepreneurs considering a one-person shop?

Shopkeeper: Running a one-person shop is harder than you think. At first, it's overwhelming to welcome customers, and there are many physical challenges when you work multiple tasks at the same time. But the important thing is to constantly improve yourself and think about what value you can deliver to your customers. Even if you don't have many customers in the beginning right away, it's important to build trust and create regular customers one by one. Also, you need constant research and learning about your skills and services. Because customers want good service and trust above all else, I think it's most important to focus on providing them.

Interviewer: Last time, what was your most rewarding moment while running a one-person shop?

Shopkeeper: The most rewarding moment was when I had regular customers. The first customer came here regularly after a few visits, and I'm very proud when they say, "You've made me feel a lot better here." Also, it's very rewarding when customers trust me and recommend me. That's how much my relationship with the customer deepens and I realize that what I've done is meaningful.

Interviewer: That's a very touching story. Thank you for today's interview. I hope more people will be able to get healing through Kim Min-ji's service in the future.

Shop Operator: Thank you! I will also continue to work to provide more satisfactory services to our customers.
