Massages are one of the oldest healing methods naturally born in the process of humans taking care of their bodies. Everyone has experienced at least once that the pain is relieved by pressing or rubbing the painful area with their hands. As these instinctive behaviors have been transmitted and systematized throughout generations, massage has developed into the realm of medicine, healing, and culture beyond simple contact.

The history of massages goes back to ancient civilizations. In ancient Egypt, the use of massages and perfumes was established as a routine health care method. Mural paintings and literature from Egyptian ruins show massage scenes centered on the hands and feet, which can be interpreted as an early form of reflex therapy. Egyptians believed that massages facilitated blood flow and prevented diseases, and combined with medicinal oils increased the therapeutic effect. This knowledge spread to other civilizations along the Mediterranean coast.

In ancient Greece, massages developed further in medical concepts. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, emphasized the value of a therapeutic action, explaining that the pressure and speed of the massage affect the body. Particularly closely related to exercise, Olympic athletes managed their muscles through massages before and after training. Since then, large-scale public baths have developed in Rome, and massages have been widely distributed not only to the nobility but also to the general public. The Romans recognized bathing, massage, and rest as a healthcare process.

Meanwhile, in the East, massage combined with philosophical and medical ideas to form a unique system. In China, massage and chuna have been used as oriental medicine treatments since BC, and the view of the human body as an organism through which blood flows has become the center. The theory that the function of internal organs is controlled by stimulating the meridians and blood spots and the cause of disease is controlled has extended the concept of massage to treatment beyond simple muscle relaxation. These traditions have influenced East Asia as a whole, including Korea and Japan.

India's massage history is also very deep. Ayurveda, a traditional Indian medicine, believes that massaging is a key means of restoring the balance between the body, mind, and soul. It is characterized by using a variety of oils and techniques depending on the individual's constitution and condition, and in particular, a full-body massage using warm oil is considered effective in releasing waste from the body and stabilizing the mind and body. This Indian massage has become the basis of today's aroma massage and spa culture.

Entering medieval Europe, massages faced a period of decline for a while. This is because religious values were emphasized and negative perceptions of physical contact spread. However, after the Renaissance, as movements to understand the human body scientifically became active, interest in massages also increased again. In the 19th century, P. H. Ling of Sweden established a systematic massage technique based on anatomy and physiology, which became the basis for modern Western massage.

In modern times, massage is used in various fields such as medical, sports, beauty, and wellness. Massages combined with physical therapy have become an important factor in rehabilitation treatment, and sports massage has become an essential way to manage players' condition. In addition, in the modern society where stress and fatigue have become commonplace, massage is recognized as a means of self-management for improving mental stability and quality of life.

As such, the history of massage has changed in form and meaning depending on the times and cultures, but it has been constantly developed amid efforts by humans to protect health and alleviate pain. Today's massage, which combines ancient empirical wisdom and modern science, will continue to evolve with human life in the future.
