Origins and Development Process of Swedish Massage
Swedish massage is a widely known technique that is called the standard of modern massages. It is used in various fields, such as hotel spas, therapy centers, and medical aids, and is familiar to many people with its smooth and stable management method. However, Swedish massage is not just a resting technique, but also a systematic physical care method that was born amid the development of academic research and physical science in 19th century Europe.
The basis of Swedish massage was formed in Sweden in the early 19th century. This was a period when labor intensity increased due to the Industrial Revolution, and physical illness and chronic fatigue emerged as social problems. People began to pay attention not only to disease treatment, but also to prevention and health maintenance, and in this trend of the times, a new approach combining physical exercise and manual therapy emerged.
The person at the center of this trend is Fer Henrik Ling. Ling systematically analyzed the effects of human movement on health based on military training, physical education, and medical research. He tried to establish a body management system based on scientific principles, pointing out the limitations of treatments implemented without understanding the structure and function of the body. As a result, 'Swedish gymnastics' was born, which was a comprehensive health care method that integrated exercise, massage, and breathing methods.
In Ring's system, massage was not just an auxiliary tool, but a key factor in promoting muscle recovery and blood circulation. He saw that hand stimulation had a positive effect on the nervous system and helped restore the function of joints and muscles. However, Ring died without naming the massage technique in detail or completing the technical system.
Since then, several doctors and therapists who inherited Ling's thoughts have developed massage techniques more elaborately. Among them, Johann Georg Metzger, who organized the existing manual therapy from a medical point of view and gave clear standards for massage movement. Metzger classified massage techniques according to hand movement, pressure, and direction, and systematized them in French terms to increase academic credibility. As a result, Swedish massage was recognized as a medical adjuvant therapy rather than folk therapy.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Swedish massages spread beyond Europe to the United States. In the United States, it was actively introduced in the fields of rehabilitation treatment and sports medicine, and since then, it has become a popular massage by combining it with wellness culture. In particular, soft pressure and rhythmic movements that do not strain the body were evaluated as a management method that anyone of all ages can receive.
In modern times, Swedish massage has become the basis of various massage techniques. Deep tissue massage, lymph massage, sports massage, etc. are all developed based on the basic principles of Swedish massage. The core values of Swedish massage for a long time are the touch that moves along the muscle texture, pressure control considering circulation, and psychological stability.
As a result, the history of Swedish massage is the product of efforts to scientifically understand the human body. This massage technique, which has pursued harmony between body and mind beyond simple fatigue relief, has not lost its essence despite the changes of the times and continues to this day. In this respect, Swedish massage can be seen as a symbol of mankind's continuous search for a healthy life beyond a skill.
